This section describes the various settings and preparations to be performed before printer driver installation.
Checking the network connection
Check whether the computer is connected to the network. For a wireless LAN, a session must be established between the computer and the access point.
Setting up a firewall
In the firewall settings, allow Port 8611 for TCP/UDP so that communication can take place with this machine.
The firewall setup window differs depending on the distribution.
For Fedora 16
1. From the Desktop panel, choose [Activities] - [Applications] - [Other] - [Firewall].
2. In the [Firewall Configuration] window, select [Other Ports].
3. Click [Add], select the udp protocol for Port 8611, and then click [OK].
4. Using the same operation you used in 3., add the tcp protocol for Port 8611.
5. Click [Apply].
For openSUSE 12.1
1. If the Desktop is GNOME, from the menu, select [Activities] - [Applications] - [System Tools] - [YaST]. If the Desktop is KDE, from the menu, select [Applications] - [System] - [Administrator Settings].
2. In the [Security and Users] section, select [Firewall].
3. From [Allowed Services], click [Advanced...]. The [Additional Allowed Ports] dialog opens.
4. Enter port number "8611" in [TCP Ports] and [UDP Ports], and then click [OK] to close the dialog.
5. Click [Next], and then click [Finish].
Correcting cupsd.conf (Fedora 16/openSUSE 12.1 only)
Depending on the selected language, correct DefaultLanguage.
Open /etc/cups/cupsd.conf with an editor and add the following line at the end:
Example: For the English system environment:
DefaultLanguage en_GB
SELinux setup (Fedora 16 only)
Before installing the SELinux software, change the SELinux settings. Using an editor, open
/etc/sysconfig/selinux, and change the "SELINUX=" line as shown below.
SELINUX=permissive
Preparing the printer driver package
The packages necessary for installing the printer driver differ depending on which distribution you are using.
Download the following archived file from the Canon Web site:
"3.80-x" in the above files is the version number.
For Fedora 16/openSUSE 12.1

Connecting the machine
For a USB connection
Before installing the printer driver, connect the computer and the machine with a USB cable and turn on the machine.

If a window that prompts you to add a printer is automatically displayed when you connect the machine, cancel the window by closing it. |
For a network connection
For a wired LAN connection, use a network cable to connect this machine to a network device.
For a wireless LAN connection, enable the wireless LAN and connect the machine to the network.
If the model is both wired and wireless LAN enabled, switch the machine to either wired LAN or wireless LAN, and connect it to the network.
