This section describes errors and how to address them.
If Automatic Print Head Alignment fails
If the jammed paper is not removed out when duplex printing
If "Ink Info Number: 1683" is displayed
If Automatic Print Head Alignment fails
If an error message related to Automatic Print Head Alignment is displayed, one of the following conditions may exist:
Perform a check for each condition.
Print head nozzles are clogged.
Press the OK button to dismiss the error, and print the nozzle check pattern to check the status of the Print Head.
Paper of size other than A4 or Letter is loaded in the Rear Tray.
Press the OK button to dismiss the error, then load one sheet of A4 or Letter-sized paper in the Rear Tray.
For Automatic Print Head Alignment, always load paper in the Rear Tray.
The Paper Output Slot is exposed to strong light.
Press the OK button to dismiss the error, and then adjust your operating environment and/or the position of the machine so that the Paper Output Slot is not exposed directly to strong light.
After carrying out the above measures, if the problem continues after aligning the Print Head again, press the OK button to dismiss the error, and then perform Manual Print Head Alignment.
To change to Manual Head Alignment, click [Custom Settings] on the "[Maintenance] Tab" and enable [Align heads manually].
If the jammed paper is not removed out when duplex printing
When the message "Paper is jammed in the duplexing transport unit." is displayed and you are unable to remove the jammed paper, remove the jammed paper according to the following procedure:
(1) Turn off the machine, and unplug the power cord of the machine from the power supply.
(2) Remove the Cassette.
If the paper is loaded on the Rear Tray, remove the paper from the Rear Tray and retract the Paper Support.
(3) Set the machine upright with the left side down.

When standing the machine, make sure that the scanning unit / cover is closed securely. |
(4) Slowly pull the jammed paper out so that the paper does not tear.

Set the machine back to its original position immediately after removing the jammed paper. |
(5) Align the paper, then reload it in the Cassette.
Reload paper in the Rear Tray, if necessary.

When reloading the paper into the machine, confirm that you are using the correct paper and are loading it into the machine correctly. |
(6) Insert the Cassette into the machine again.
(7) Plug the machine back in and turn the machine back on.
All print jobs in queue are canceled. Reprint if necessary.
If you cannot remove the paper or if the paper tears inside the machine, or if the paper jam error continues after removing the paper, contact the service center.
If a printer problem occurs
When the message "A printer error has occurred." is displayed, perform the operation described below.
If error number "B200" is displayed
Turn off the machine, and unplug the power cord of the machine from the power supply.
Contact the service center.
If error number "5100" is displayed
(1) Check whether anything is blocking the movement of the Print Head Holder.
(2) Cancel printing, and turn off the machine.
(3) Then clear the paper jam or foreign object that is preventing the Print Head Holder from moving, and turn on the machine again.
Be careful not to touch the components inside the machine. The machine may not print out properly if you touch it.
If the problem is not resolved, contact the service center.
If error number "6000" is displayed
(1) If any object is placed in front of the machine, remove it.
(2) Open the Paper Output Tray gently, then turn the power off and back on.
Other occasion
(1) Turn off the machine, and unplug the power cord of the machine from the power supply.
(2) Plug the machine back in and turn the machine back on.
If the problem is not resolved, contact the service center.
If "Ink Info Number: 1683" is displayed
If a message like the one below is displayed, the corresponding cause and corrective action are described.
Ink Info Number : 1683
The remaining level of the following ink cannot be correctly detected.
Magenta <ink tank number>
Replace the ink tank.
The remaining ink level cannot be correctly detected. (The lamp on the ink tank flashes.)
Replace the ink tank and close the scanning unit / cover.
Printing with an ink tank that was once empty may damage the machine.
If you want to continue printing in this condition, you need to release the function for detecting the remaining ink level. Press and hold the machine's Stop button for at least 5 seconds, and then release it.
With this operation, releasing the function for detecting the remaining ink level is memorized. Please be advised that Canon shall not be liable for any machine malfunction or damage caused by refilled ink tanks.
