This section describes the various settings and preparations to be performed before ScanGear installation.

Checking the network connection

Check whether the computer is connected to the network. For a wireless LAN, a session must be established between the computer and the access point.

Setting up a firewall (Fedora 20 only)

In the firewall settings, allow Port 8611 for TCP/UDP so that communication can take place with this machine.

You must update the package before setting the firewall.

Execute the following command line of a terminal software, and then restart your computer.

[root@zzz /yyy]# yum update NetworkManager

If you want to update the package, log in as root.

1. From the Desktop panel, choose [Activities] - [Show Applications] - [All] - [Sundry] - [Firewall].

2. In the [Firewall Configuration] window, under [Configuration], select [Permanent].

3. Select [Ports].

4. Click [Add], enter port number 8611, select protocol udp, and then click [OK].

5. Using the same operation you used in 4., add the tcp protocol for Port 8611.

6. Click [x] to close the [Firewall Configuration].

Preparing ScanGear package

The packages necessary for installing ScanGear differ depending on which distribution you are using.

Download the following archived file from the Canon Web site:
"3.00-x" in the above files is the version number.

For Fedora 20

scangearmp2-3.00-x-rpm.tar.gz

For Ubuntu 14.04

scangearmp2-3.00-x-deb.tar.gz

Connecting the machine

For a USB connection

Before installing ScanGear, connect the computer and the machine with a USB cable. Do not turn on the machine at this point.

For a network connection

For a wired LAN connection, use a network cable to connect this machine to a network device.
For a wireless LAN connection, enable the wireless LAN and connect the machine to the network.
If the model is both wired and wireless LAN enabled, switch the machine to either wired LAN or wireless LAN, and connect it to the network.

Carry out wired/wireless switching from the operation panel of the machine.

When you connect this machine to a network, the following restriction applies:

Only connections within the same segment are supported.
